Portuguese

Spoken across four continents, Portuguese opens the door to different cultures and traditions around the world. In our courses, you’ll learn European Portuguese and explore how it differs from Brazilian Portuguese.

Course formats and levels

Our Portuguese beginner courses are group courses that are held on location. Our intermediate and advanced courses are one-on-one courses that take place online.

Group courses (A1 - A2)

From the very first group lesson, an experienced teacher will help you build on your vocabulary and understand how the language works. You’ll use traditional learning methods as well as online learning tools, such as Quizlet and social media. You learn European Portuguese, the Portuguese language spoken in Portugal. There is also time spent on the difference between Portuguese of Portugal and Portuguese of Brazil. The course not only focuses on speaking and listening skills. Additional work on grammar, as well as reading and writing skills, will support you in the language learning process. Your teacher will be a (near-) native speaker, and the group lessons will be conducted in Portuguese. Instructions will only be given in Dutch or English if it’s absolutely necessary.

Online one-on-one courses (B1 - B2)

This program spans 8 dynamic modules, blending interactive sessions with your dedicated teacher and independent study.

Portuguese B1 and B2 are one-on-one courses with a modern, task-oriented approach. The courses combine web-based self-study, independent study from a book and interactive online one-to-one sessions with the tutor. The web-based self-study component is supplemented with effective language training on www.quizlet.com and study materials developed by the Language Centre. The focus is on speaking and listening skills.

After completing a course, you’ll be able to talk about daily activities, understand advertising and simple news items and give an opinion.

Course level check

If you have no prior knowledge of Portuguese, you can simply register for Portuguese A1.

If you would like to take any of the other levels, you must first successfully complete the previous level or demonstrate a comparable level of Portuguese. Otherwise, you can make an appointment for a course level check.

Course level checks take place by appointment only on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Please send an email to Karin Bartelet and indicate which course level you wish to follow, your current level and propose several available dates and times. She will get in touch to advise the correct course. If needed an intake meeting will be scheduled. The outcome of the test is final (cannot be discussed). If necessary, we will change your registration accordingly.
